Gurucharan University, Silchar, formerly known as Gurucharan College, introduced the science stream in 1948. Dr. B. Bhattacharjee and Shri R. K. Dey were the first teachers of Zoology and Botany in the Department of Biology at that time.
The Department of Zoology was established in 1949 and is one of the pioneering departments for science education in the Cachar region of Assam. In 1960–61, the department started offering the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Zoology (Pass course). This was later upgraded to the Honours programme in 1970–71 during the tenure of Sri H. P. Bhattacharjee as the Principal of Gurucharan College.
At present, the department offers Zoology at the Higher Secondary level as well as in integrated undergraduate programmes with both Pass and Honours courses. The department has also introduced postgraduate and PhD programmes in Zoology from 2026.
